How to Make Your Child Feel Extra Special on Their Birthday
Share
As a mum of two girls, I know just how much birthdays mean to children. From the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed (usually far too late and absolutely buzzing with excitement!), they want to feel celebrated, seen, and completely special. 🎉
The good news? You don't need a huge budget or an elaborate plan to make a child feel like the most important person in the world on their birthday. It's often the small, thoughtful touches that mean the most. Here are some of my favourite ideas — as a mum and as someone who's spent 9 years making birthday accessories!
1. Let Them Wear Something Special to School
For primary school aged children, their birthday at school is a big deal. Walking in wearing something that marks them out as the birthday child — whether that's a badge, a special hair bow, or a birthday crown — makes the whole day feel magical.
A handmade birthday badge is perfect for this. It's something they can wear all day, that their teacher and friends will notice, and that makes them feel truly celebrated. At Lottie Button, all our badges are personalised with their age and made in their favourite theme — from classic stars to Lilo & Stitch and football. Browse birthday badges here →
2. Decorate Their Bedroom Door Overnight
This one costs almost nothing but creates such a magical moment. After they've gone to sleep, decorate their bedroom door with balloons, streamers, and a little "Happy Birthday" banner. When they open the door in the morning, the look on their face is absolutely priceless. ✨
3. Let Them Choose Everything
On their birthday, let them be in charge — within reason! Let them choose what's for breakfast, what film to watch, what to have for tea. It sounds simple, but giving children that sense of control and importance on their special day means so much to them.
4. Write Them a Birthday Letter
This is something I started doing for Lottie and Hattie and it's become one of my favourite traditions. Each birthday, I write them a little letter — telling them what I love about them, what they've achieved that year, and how proud I am. They absolutely treasure them, and one day they'll have a collection to look back on. 💛
5. Make a Big Deal of the Morning
Birthdays should start with a bang! Balloons in the kitchen, their favourite breakfast, presents before school if possible — starting the day with excitement sets the tone for the whole day. Even if the main celebration is at the weekend, make the actual birthday morning feel special.
6. Involve Their Friends at School
If your child's school allows it, sending in a small treat to share with their class is a lovely way to involve their friends in the celebration. Most children absolutely love the moment their class sings Happy Birthday to them!
7. Create a Birthday Tradition
Children love traditions — things they can look forward to and rely on every year. It could be a special birthday breakfast, a trip to their favourite place, or a particular film you always watch together. Having a tradition makes each birthday feel connected to all the ones before it, which is really lovely as they grow up.
8. Capture the Moments
Take lots of photos — especially of the little moments, not just the posed ones. The excitement of opening presents, the concentration of blowing out candles, the joy of wearing their birthday badge to school. These are the memories you'll treasure forever.
The Most Important Thing
More than anything, children just want to feel seen and loved on their birthday. A little thought, a little effort, and a whole lot of love goes a very long way. 💛
